When dual booting Ubuntu and Winxp, why is winxp causing my monitor trouble?
AdamMPkins asked:
I get a message from my MONITOR, the same type as if you were to press the monitor’s menu button, that says “out off range?” I can log into ubuntu just fine, i have no trouble there but this monitor problem happens just after the Winxp progress bar finishes loading, it should go to login but instead the screen goes blank and says “Out off range.” The monitor is a Compaq MV720. Any ideas?

I assume you’re using grub.
Press F8 after choosing Windows as your operating system in grub. Boot up in VGA mode. Out of range usually either means that they computer is attempting to either display an unsupported resolution, or it is attempting to use an unsupported refresh rate.

you’ll need to boot in to windows in safe mode:
If your computer is running Windows XP or Windows Vista
1. From the Windows Start menu, go to Turn off computer and click Restart.
2. As the computer restarts, watch for a progress bar at the bottom of the screen. press F8 about once every second.
3. Immediately press F8 before the progress bar reaches the right side of the screen.
4. From the Windows Start-up menu, highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5. Wait for your desktop to appear, and then make the necessary repairs (for example, uninstall programs or devices).
6. When the repairs are done, restart the computer, and allow it to boot normally.
then lower the resolution or refresh rather of your monitor. that should take care of it.
