I am going to try my hand at making my own computers. I want to know if there are any manufacturer out there that makes hardware that does not easily support a Ubuntu linux-based operating system. That way I can avoid from using it as I do not want to pay the extra 150 bucks to get an OEM version of windows vista.
I tried to uninstall programme called Automatrix by using install/uninstall programme menu. but, this programme doesn’t appear on the list of install/uninstall menu. so, I used command on terminal
sudo dpkg -r Automatrix
and It said the programme doesn’t exist something like that.
How can I uninstall pakage that doesn’t appear on install/uninstall menu on ubuntu???
and one more question is how can I login as root on ubuntu?
I don’t which system i prefer, Ubuntu from Linux or Windows Vista or even other systems you think are better.
If you could write a list of pros and cons it would be appreciated alot. Thanks

I want to test as many free open source ( Linux based or not ) operating system as I can, but I don’t have a high speed broad band Internet. so I want to order some on CD like Ubuntu. is there any other OS that I can order on CD as Free?

I am downloading ubuntu standard personal edition on my
intel e6850
evga 680i a1 motherboard
with a evga 8800gt superclocked
will the standard edition work or do i have to download the 64 bit intel or amd computer version?

I accidentally installed Ubuntu with Wubi on my D: Drive instead of my C: Drive and when Wubi had me restart the computer, I did not have the option to boot in Ubuntu. Do I need to reinstall Ubuntu on the C: Drive?
My computer is an Acer laptop that originally came with Vista installed on it. It did not come with a Windows disk. I have a copy of Windows XP with a valid product key. However, when I try to boot from the disk, it does not let me. How do I install XP on this machine?
